Our Week 21 Power Rankings are complete with no change at the top. Will the playoff push help change the view from the top?
The top four spots remain unchanged this week with one team closing in on the top spot. This week brings us a bonus team in the top 10 as our 10th spot saw a tie as two teams are somehow clinging onto a spot in the rankings. As the calendar turns to September, will the playoff push see a change atop in the coming weeks?
Despite losing 5 of 6 games this week, the Athletics somehow instilled enough confidence in our experts that there were just enough votes to stay relevant. Hampering their push to sneak into the playoffs is their sudden bullpen collapse. They’ve had 10 chances to finish games off but have only converted 5 of those opportunities. That failure was highlighted with 3 consecutive blown saves this week. Adding insult to injury, their team ERA for August is over 4 for the first time in 3 months. The weekend opening loss to the Yankees didn’t help start the rough stretch run headed in the right direction.
Somehow here is another team just barely hangin on to a spot in the rankings. The Padres have suddenly found themselves on the outside of the playoffs looking in. Getting swept by the Dodgers didn’t help their case at all. What once was a top 5 NL run-scoring team can hardly get men on base in August. Their .227 batting average for the month of August is only better than Pittsburg and the NY Mets. Hopefully they can get back on track this week as they take on the Angels and division foe Diamondbacks.
Another team falling in their division and respective playoff race. The Red Sox are barely clutching onto the WC2 spot in the American League. Helping keep them in the race is the return of Chris Sale (3-0 and 21K in 3 August starts) and an offense hitting .269 with 36HR this month (2nd and 3rd in AL, respectively). As they head to September, they need to find a way to not play the Yankees in October.
