A late season push to make the playoffs helps a new team enter the Top 10. The top two teams stay the same and clinch their playoff tickets.
The Athletics have somehow managed to stay in the Power Rankings most of the year. From a hot start to what we see now – a team barely holding onto playoff hopes. Those hopes are being held alive by the man who has the most hits since the All-Star break, Starling Marte, with 80. He also holds a .357 batting average since the All-Star break. And, despite holding a .317 batting average for the year and leading both the AL and NL in batting average, he won’t win a batting title thanks to not having the required number of at-bats in either league to win. So, the hottest hitter not winning a batting title is leading a team trying to sneak into the playoffs.
The hot start to end August had the Yankees cruising to the playoffs. However, their slow September start and a cold Joey Gallo nearly ended their season. Now, Gallo is warming up and Gerrit Cole is striking out hitters aplenty (league-leading 12.3 K/9). Thanks to these two guys over the last week, the Pinstripes played to a 4-3 record and holding on to their playoff push by a very slim margin.
